Paul affirms that our faith rests not on the wisdom of men but on the power of God. God's power is love, for God is love. Faith is, then, a gift, for whatever is based on love is freely given. As a gift, faith is something for which we must always be grateful.
When arguments arise about the nature of the Church and Church policies, it would be well to remember this saying of Paul. At various stages in our history, men have tried to reform the Church through human wisdom and inevitably such attempts have led to failure, caused much confusion, led many of God's people astray and given rise to teachings much at variance with the revelation that God is love and hence at variance with the truth of the Gospel.
Psalm 119[118] uses all possible different terms to praise God's Law. One of the very consoling thoughts it conveys is: "Your command has made me wiser than my enemies" for, as the writer continues, God's law is a source of understanding and discernment. With this wisdom of faith we can face the trials of everyday life.
Father in heaven, by Your truth keep us safe from evil ways and from all our faults and failings and so guide our footsteps in the pathways of peace and holiness.
