Today we are introduced to John the Baptist. His stark austerity can be scary. The word 'repentance' can be intimidating.
As we look more closely, John is asking people to let go of what puts distance between them and God. He encourages people to embrace what draws them closer to God. John is inviting people to get ready for something great that is just ahead - God is coming to earth.
The reading from Baruch is addressed to people who are suffering in exile in Babylon. God asks them to put on fine clothes - get ready. God is about to be lead them back home.
How would I like to get ready for Christmas this year? Is there something, (a behaviour, atttitude, or relationship) that draws me away from the Lord? I ask Jesus to help me to let go of this in some way these days of Advent.
Is there something that helps me to feel Christ close to me in daily life? I ask Jesus to help me enjoy this closeness with him even more this Advent.
Lord, I want to cooperate with Your grace. I want to draw closer to You.
