It seems that, on this last day of 2015 we have nothing to celebrate. The past year has again been full of human tragedies, where many innocent lives were lost because of the Mediterranean refugee crisis, famine in Africa, continual conflicts in Middle East, human errors in many areas. Natural disasters such as flooding and drought have struck at various places, affecting and displacing many families. Facing all these disasters, and seeing no land at peace, we feel heavy-hearted, depressed and sorrowful.
These situations are often caused by human greediness and selfishness that keep on exploiting the once beautiful world which God created. Christ is the true light that comes and enlightens us who live in the shadow of darkness. It is only through him that we are drawn to become the children of God so that we can work together to restore the world to its original beauty.
Pope John Paul II often reminded us not to be afraid when facing difficulties: rather we should look up and perceive the face of Christ. The glory that the Apostles, the Virgin Mary, and all saints have received in heaven is the result of their unequivocal following of God's will. Jesus says: "The father will honour whoever serves me" (John 12:26).
Lord, grant us the grace we need to follow your will unequivocally.
