"Every scribe who is learned in the Kingdom of God is like the head of a household who can bring from his storeroom both the new and the old." This intriguing verse leads us to think that Matthew is pointing to himself as the author of the Gospel, that he was a scribe "learned in the Kingdom of God." The word "learned" is the basis of the name Matthew: he may have been a scribe learned in the Old Testament and now as a disciple of Jesus, a Christian, he was able to draw on the Old Testament to illustrate the Good News that Jesus was indeed the one "who was to come."

As we read a Gospel, we can, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, draw both new and old enlightenment from the evangelist's treasure house of truth

The Gospels are old in that they were written almost two thousand years ago. Reading these ancient documents of our faith, we can learn to appreciate the beauty of the truth that has nourished generations of Christians. We can be open to new insights as the Gospel speaks to us in our day and in our very broken and problematic world.

Guided by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, may our hearts always be open to the ever new truth of the Gospel.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
