In a dry and parched desert land, water is the difference between life and death. Jeremiah uses this vivid biblical image to show us the importance of placing our wholehearted trust in God. Like trees watered by deep, hidden streams we will flourish and have life. Those who place their hope and trust in other things will be disappointed - in the long run, they do not give life. Included in this trust is the commitment to pattern our lives on God's laws - compassion, mercy, generosity, and kindness.

The opposite of love is not hatred but indifference to the needs and suffering of others. The rich man placed all his trust in money and power. He did not even notice Lazarus and his misery - his heart was completely desensitized to other people. Lazarus hoped and trusted in God, and was not disappointed after his death. The rich man could not believe that he could not order people around in Sheol. No water or comfort for him - he had chosen his fate long ago. Even his desire to warn his brothers was rebuffed - they should know better, they had the teachings of their religious tradition and that is all they needed. No excuses were accepted. Each day we should take the greatest care to ensure that we are not indifferent to others. When we are indifferent, we are making a choice that will have negative effects on our soul's development.
