The world can seem like a grim and joyless place sometimes. There is far too much misery and injustice. Sometimes our own life becomes a sorrowful burden. God's word in Isaiah addressed the Israelites who were heartbroken at the destruction of their nation and temple. God assured them that the best was yet to come - God was going to make everything new and take away their suffering and misery. Jerusalem would become a place of peace, prosperity, and joy. That is what God always intends for us, for that is what God is about. But too often human beings mess up God's plans with negative behaviour and attitudes. Let us have hope and faith that God yearns to create a new world - perhaps we can begin the process with our own commitment to making the world a better place.

Sometimes people ask God to answer their requests because they want a sign or assurance. Jesus was a little discouraged that many of those in the Gospel story needed to test him. But the royal official showed great faith and Jesus granted his request. In a sense, his son was made new. When God heals us or helps us through the difficulties of life, God has made us new. This means that we have to leave the old behind and not try to resume our lives as they were before. The kingdom of God is about change and growth that never ceases - let us not cling to the past or the familiar. Our prayer each day can be for a new earth and a new self.
