Today we hear about a tense question in the early church. How much observation of the Jewish law was essential to their identity as Christians? Some early Christians promoted strict adherence, even for elements such as circumcision. Others viewed this as not essential for salvation. Church leaders decide to meet to discuss this question.
How do you decide important questions? How do you know what Christ wants you to choose in life?
Jesus explains that in order to have life and bear fruit, we are to abide in him. Through the image of the vine and the branches Jesus invites us to deep intimacy and life with him.
Yet, in daily life there are many things that can distract or draw us away from God, especially given the busyness of life. Jesus invites us to spend some time each day, lingering with him. There are many ways to abide with him: praying with Scripture, expressing our daily needs to Christ, simply sitting silently with Jesus and receiving his loveā¦
Whenever we do this, even for a few minutes, we centre on his presence and voice in our lives. He changes us. Christ's desires become our desires. Our words, actions and choices slowly become guided by him.
Lord, I want to be closer to You. Help me to abide with You.
