People who take every word of Scripture literally run into great problems. Matthew finishes his Gospel with Jesus' command to baptize those who come to faith “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Yet here in Acts we have an account of people being baptized “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Is there a contradiction? No. The different formulae are simply indicative of development in liturgical practice following a deepening and development of the Church's understanding of the mystery of Jesus, his relation with the Father and his being in the Trinity. This development in understanding touched all areas of Christian life as we saw in the readings on what we may call the Council of Jerusalem. The gift of salvation is more important than minor details. We must of course distinguish between adapting the Gospel to the desires of the modern world and ensuring that the Gospel is available and divinely attractive to the people of the modern world as to the people of every time and nation, every tribe and race.

Father, we believe that our Faith is ever ancient and ever new. Keep us renewed in your truth so that we may always rejoice in Your gift of salvation.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That, rejecting the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbors who suffer, especially the sick and the poor.
