It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be freed from sin. [2 Maccabees 12:43-46].

The Catholic Church and some other Christians have chosen to accept the Greek Old Testament, which contains books that are not in the Hebrew. Thus in the liturgy we sometimes find readings and antiphons that are not included in some Bibles. This is true of some of the suggested readings and antiphons for today's Masses. The quotation above from the Second Book of Maccabees is one such text. Though it refers to an incident that happened in Old Testament times, it is a fitting statement of today's liturgy.

Similarly, one of the entrance antiphons for today is "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord and let perpetual light sine upon them." Though not from a book recognized by all Christians as scripture, in its simplicity and profound faith, it is a worthy sentiment for all of us to express and a most fitting prayer for the dead.

The Creed which we recite at Mass affirms our belief in the Communion of Saints: even while still on earth, we are one community, one Church in union with the dead. Thus we may pray for each other, living or dead as we believe our dead brothers and sisters in heaven keep us in their hearts and their prayer.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That we may be open to personal encounter and dialogue with all, even those whose convictions differ from our own.
