The four young men in Babylonian captivity were faced with a choice. They had been singled out by the king for advancement and privilege, but there was a catch. Following the customs of the court would compromise their fidelity to the Jewish law regarding impure food. They chose to be faithful, and God rewarded their fidelity by making them prosper along with the others. Often we think we have to give in or compromise our ideals and commitment to be successful. Far from it - in the long run, we will be blessed in ways we cannot imagine. Faithfulness to God is always a winning choice.

It is easy to give to others when we don't feel it. When we have to make a real sacrifice of time, energy, or money to serve the needs of others we find out just how spiritual we really are. The widow in the story might have had to skip a meal or two to make her donation, while wealthier donors didn't even feel the pinch. The kingdom of God is built of many small things done with great love. We have numerous opportunities each day to contribute to God's work in the world. Let us never look upon the needs of others as a burden or an interruption, but as an opportunity to show great love.

Lord, help me to give without counting the cost.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That we may be open to personal encounter and dialogue with all, even those whose convictions differ from our own.
