Our responsorial psalm today is the shortest of all the psalms, yet we should not for that reason dismiss it as if it did not have much to say. The opening words "Praise the Lord, all nations" immediately associates with a number of psalms which call upon all the nations of the earth to praise God - a strong reminder of how firmly the doctrine of God's universal salvation was revealed in the Old Testament: "his faithfulness is eternal." Though eternal seems to us a kind of "time-word" we may also understand it as a "special word" meaning universal, "world-wide", "available to all." Thus the psalm is a neat summary of the mission of evangelization. As Pope Francis has taught us, belief in the Gospel and in Jesus should bring us such joy and hope that we desire that all those who share human dignity with us will be drawn to Jesus to attain the same joy and hope and that all may praise God especially in union with the risen Christ and so come to a life-giving experience of God's eternal and all-embracing love.
