What is the toughest question someone has ever asked you? Today Jesus asks his disciples two difficult questions. One is about what people say about Jesus' identity. The second question is more personal and cuts to the heart: "But who do you say that I am?"

Peter sees the truth, that Jesus is not simply a prophet, he is the very Son of God. This is an important step in his relationship with Jesus. Peter begins to understand that, in Jesus, God has come to earth.

Interestingly, as the conversation continues, Peter comes to know himself more deeply as well. After Peter expresses who Jesus is, Jesus gives him the name of 'Peter' or 'rock'. He will become a foundation for the Church. In other words, Peter's identity and mission are linked.

Who do you say that Jesus is? What would it be like to express this to Jesus? Today Jeremiah speaks about knowing the Lord and the Lord knowing us. If we converse with Jesus, we may learn about him and about ourselves as well.

Is it possible that Jesus has a name for you, a name that touches on your mission?

Lord, who do You say that I am?

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
