The kingdoms of Syria and northern Israel had approached Ahaz, king of Judah to fight with them against Assyria. Ahaz had refused. Now, both these kingdoms plan to attack Judah instead. Ahaz is in the midst of preparing for war, when Isaiah goes to meet him. Isaiah's advice to the king is to remain calm and not be afraid. Then, Isaiah proceeds to give Ahaz a sign even when the king refuses to ask for it: a young woman will bear a son and his name will be Emmanuel, which means "God-is-with-us".
At that time, it was thought the young woman mentioned by Isaiah could either be the prophet's own wife or even the king's wife. However, what is clear is that the sign given by Isaiah at that time - the birth of a child - may have sounded ridiculous. What can a newborn child offer at this time of impending war? Can he help build the city's defences or even avert the war? But the sign Isaiah was offering was something more enduring and universal, that is, hope for future generations - the birth of the Messiah.
Today, in the face of numerous challenges and uncertainties, we are reminded again about this is sign of hope, the birth of Jesus, our Saviour. Through Mary, a young woman in faraway village, God entered the world, as a helpless little baby, to save His people. Through her, God offers us an enduring and universal sign that He-is-with-us. Be assured. God is with you.
Lord, thank You for being with me always.
