Knowing that the Pharisees were plotting against him, Jesus "withdrew from that place". Jesus teaches us in many different ways: by words, actions and attitudes. In "withdrawing from that place" Jesus taught us a certain practical wisdom, a wisdom which he taught his disciples directly in words when he sent them out on mission: If people in any town did not receive the disciples preaching the Gospel, there was no need to enter into confrontation with them: the disciples were to shake the dust of their feet and leave (cf. Mt 10:14; Mk 6:11; Lk 9:5). So Jesus himself did not confront the Pharisees on this occasion. On other occasions he did indeed confront them. Not all occasions are the same or demand the same response or provide the same opportunity for evangelization. Wisdom and discernment must guide us in deciding how to act.

People will usually not be drawn to Jesus through argument and confrontation, through damnatory attitudes or unaccepting criticism. So God's true Servant of God will not contend or cry out. There is always a time for wise teaching, respectful discussion, care, love and compassion and for silence and patient waiting for another opportunity.
