People often cling to what little they have (and sometimes even when they have a lot) out of fear. Sometimes it is an understandable fear, as in the case of the widow of Zarephath. The prophet asked her for hospitality in the form of food, but she and her son were on the verge of starvation. The prophet reassured her - after all, this kindness was in God's service. God can be trusted, and whenever anything is shared with love and generosity, God provides. She did as the prophet asked and was provided with food for her and her child. Selfishness is a form of fear, and fear seems to rule our world. There is enough on this planet for everyone - if we share what we have, all will have enough, but if we grasp and withhold what others need, our survival is in question.

Our role in life is far more than just saving our soul and going to heaven. The followers of Jesus have a mission to be beacons of hope and light to a frightened and violent world. If our spirituality is tepid and our faith weak, or our commitment to justice and compassionate mercy is lacking, then we are not much use to others. Each day, at least one other person should be encouraged or enlightened by our words, deeds, and example. When this happens, we have accomplished the mission that the Lord has given us.

Lord, may I be a source of inspiration and hope to others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the aged, marginalized, and those who have no one may find - even within the huge cities of the world - opportunities for encounter and solidarity.
