There are many tensions in our religion. "Tensions" are apparent contradictions which we must live with, each in its own proper way and at its own proper time
Jesus' instructions which we read today seem to contradict other Gospel instructions or the Church's liturgical practices. Thus Jesus instructs us to pray in secret. Yet public prayer is a venerable tradition of the Church's life. Specifically, we must gather together to celebrate the Eucharist. Then, too, even if we do not blow horns to attract attention it is often impossible to give alms secretly. Many organizations have "flag days" to collect funds and, when we give a donation, we then wear a small sticker to indicate that we have contributed. Is that really very different from "blowing a trumpet looking for applause"? Indeed it is another matter altogether.
Jesus' first words guide us in understanding these instructions: "Do not perform religious acts for people to see." In participating in religious activities or in serving others, our intentions must always be "pure": we must do everything according to the Gospel spirit, with the humility which draws us more firmly into the realm of God's love.
Grant us the grace, Lord, to do everything in truth and humility, simply for love of You and of our neighbour.

DAILY OFFERING
|
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
