The two readings today mention the persecutions of Christians at the hands of the Romans. The great tragedy of this particular wave of persecution was that it was not due to any man's principles. It was due simply to Herod's bid to gain popular favour with the people. Paul is turning from the verdict of men to the verdict of God. He knew that in a very short time he would stand before the Roman judgment seat and that his trial could have only one end. He knew what the Emperor's verdict would be, but he also knew what God's verdict would be. The one whose life is dedicated to Christ is indifferent to the verdict of men.
The Gospel passage teaches us that our discovery of Jesus Christ must be a personal discovery. Our knowledge of Jesus must never be at second hand. A man might be able to give a competent summary of the teaching about Jesus of every great thinker and theologian - and still not be a Christian. Christianity never consists in knowing about Jesus; it always consists in knowing Jesus.
Heavenly Father, grant us the grace to know Jesus and do what is right in his eyes.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
