God's prophets always cause division and turmoil. Speaking the truth stirs people up - some are attracted to the proclamation and believe, while others rebel and turn away in anger and fear. Jeremiah was a most unwilling prophet - he hated the calling, and tried to walk away, but God held him fast. He knew his words would be rejected, and he knew he would pay a price for speaking out clearly. God warned Jeremiah that there was a plot against his life, but he did not run or quake in fear - he trusted totally in God. That was Jeremiah's response, and it should be ours, especially when we are under attack for our spiritual principles.
Jesus also provoked division by his teaching and ministry. Many were coming to believe in him, while others were not so sure. They began to wonder if it were possible that Jesus was the Messiah. But there were others who wanted to eliminate him completely. Even the soldiers sent to arrest him were captivated by his words and did not touch him. How do we react to the call of Jesus or to his words? Do we feel fearful or defensive, or joyful and eager? Do we say 'yes' with our lips but 'no' with our heart and our deeds? Remember, the stories in the Bible are about us, not just people long ago!
Lord, open my heart to Your words.
