"I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life."
When Jesus says this, he is teaching and preaching the people in the treasury of the Temple. He is telling the people who he is, and how he wants to relate to us. Then, thanks to the Pharisees' questioning, he goes on to speak to us of a triune relationship of the Father, who sent him, the Son Jesus himself, and us, who follow Jesus. Following Jesus will lead us to the Father, because he comes from the Father and will be in union with the Father through suffering, death and glory.
Can we imagine walking with a companion, going through shadows but somehow with certain clarity, and walking towards the light that the companion is pointing out to us? This companion is the Lord Jesus, who offers himself to be our travel companion, in order to reveal to us the Father's love for us.
Do we truly want an intimate relationship with Jesus Our Lord?
Lord, give us a pure heart, a trusting faith, and a sturdiness not easily swayed by suspicions, aggression and self-justification, that we may follow You as closely as all our strength, our heart and our mind allow.
