These days, we feel life is becoming more difficult. There are times when our faith, as followers of Jesus, is challenged, and we struggle to do what is right. At times, it may seem as though it is alright to compromise our beliefs, so that we may get on in the world and with people around us. We may justify our actions by thinking, why not, everybody is doing it or that God will understand. The scripture readings today remind us against such thinking.

The story in the first reading underlines the truth that observance of the law is more important than life itself. Each of the brothers presents a part of this truth. Firstly, it is better to die than to disobey the law of God, secondly, the king may take their lives but God will raise them up again, thirdly, the king may dismember them but God will restore their lives, and fourthly, they will be restored to life, but the king will not be restored. The writer to the Thessalonians urges Christians to stand firm and hold fast to the traditions they were taught and prays that God will encourage and strengthen their hearts for every good deed and word. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds the Sadducees of the reality of the resurrection. Whether one is worthy of a place in the resurrection does not depend on man's approval or applause but on a real adherence to the teaching of Jesus.

Times may be difficult and challenging. However, it does no excuse us from compromising the teachings of our Lord.
