Contemplating on the scene where Jesus was driving out those who were selling in the temple, we could sense Jesus' anger especially when he said, " My house will be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a robber's den." (Mt. 19:46). Yes, the temple was the place for the true worship of God, for instructions on the meaning of God's will and the place where God was present. This is why Jesus showed his anger which was a powerful source of energy that enabled him to confront those who turned the Temple of God into a market place. We can also sense Jesus' pain and suffering.
It is interesting to note that John's Gospel records the cleansing of the temple at the beginning of Jesus' ministry (Jn.2:13-35) while the synoptics (Mt.21:12-13, Mk.11:15-17) speak only of a cleansing at the close of Jesus' ministry. This may imply that whether it is in the beginning or towards the end of Jesus' ministry, Jesus had always remained consistent in His endeavour to share the Good News.
The chief priests & the ruling Jewish council were trying to kill Jesus and in today's context, we face the constant challenges to remain steadfast in our efforts to share the Good News; and strive to live and bear witness to Jesus' values against the threat of consumerism, marginalization, materialism, individualism.
"Lord, grant us the spirit of zeal like the First Apostles in their endeavour to share the Good News and to be courageous to face the challenges in living out this faith."
