All of Scripture is a divine drama, the story of God's redemption of humanity and all creation. Holy men and women played a vital role in that drama - those who said 'yes' to God and were willing to do what God asked without seeing the 'big picture.' In the Magnificat, Mary praised the God of justice, who pulled down the high and mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly, as well as feeding the hungry and turning away those with too much. Mary's God was about justice, compassion, and change, and her prayer celebrated the fact that God had kept God's promises. She felt honoured to play such an important role in this story.
Jesus's mission was to subdue a rebellious world and restore it to God. One by one, he overcame all the powers that were opposed to God, finally vanquishing death, the final enemy. He was the new Adam, restoring what had been lost and renewing the world. Finally, Revelation uses vivid symbols to portray the cosmic battle between the forces of God and opposing evil powers. Mary is given a prime role - Ark of the Covenant, and the woman clothed with the sun. The battle will be difficult, and there is danger, but the final victory of God is never in doubt. Each day we are given small opportunities to contribute to this cosmic struggle When we walk in God's ways, exercising justice, compassion, mercy, generosity, patience, and peacemaking, then we have embraced God's will for humanity.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your will.
