In today's Gospel reading, we see how Jesus healed many - all who needed to touch him and have their health restored. However, Matthew wants to reflect Jesus not only as a healer but the Messiah who inaugurates the golden age prophesized by Isaiah. So Jesus was indeed powerful both in words and action (healing and feeding).

It is interesting to note that there are similarities in the two feeding accounts (Mt. 14:13-21; Mt. 15: 32-29). Both took place in the countryside, bread and fish, Jesus gave thanks and broke the bread, disciples distributed the food and both ended in a boat trip. However the differences include the '5 loaves and 2 fish' and '7 loaves and a few small fish'; one with 12 baskets and other 7. Some evangelists suggested that the two miracles were to be seen with specific theological intentions. First multiplication fed the Jews and the second, the Gentiles. Therefore salvation is for all, both Jews and Gentiles will enjoy messianic banquet which is so beautifully described in the first reading (Is. 25: 6-10a). Obviously, we can see the contrast between the present realities around the world and this heavenly scene.

Let us take up this challenge and work towards attaining the peace and hope that Jesus promised.
