Have you ever done something you regret? Do you ever wish you could erase something from the past?
Jesus's conversation with Peter on the beach can seem awkward, even pointed. Why ask Peter three times if he loves Jesus? Does Jesus mistrust Peter?
Peter's triple affirmation of love for Jesus now serves to reverse Peter's triple denial of Jesus during the passion. Jesus has given Peter an opportunity to be reconciled and restored. It is a chance to leave the past behind and start fresh.
Yet there is more. Jesus then calls this impefect man to follow him. Even though Peter is a sinner, Jesus has an important mission for him. In turn, Peter has confidence to live out this mission because he has experienced Jesus' deep forgiveness and love.
Each time we celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, Jesus truly forgives us and we start fresh. Like Peter, Jesus has an invitation for each one of us in this life. We can choose to keep dwelling on past sins or we can be reconciled to Jesus and put our energy into moving forward together.
Is there something in my life that hungers for reconciliation with Jesus?
Lord, help me to be at peace with You. Help me to live out the mission you have given me.
