People are often dazzled by miracles but fail to understand their meaning. When Paul and Barnabas performed a miracle, the inhabitants of Lystra wanted to worship them as gods. Sometimes people today even 'worship' exceptional or charismatic individuals by putting them on a pedestal. Paul and Barnabas refused, of course, insisting that this miracle had nothing to do with them but everything to do with the God of Israel. God was calling them to a higher form of faith. When we encounter evidence of God's work in the world or in our lives, we should naturally be grateful, but we should praise God and ask what God is trying to teach us.

We should not be surprised to see signs and wonders worked through ordinary individuals. Jesus assured us that if we obey his commandments and abide in his love, he and the Father will come and make their home within us. The love of God will fill us. Spiritual power comes from being in harmony with Jesus and the Father, and we can only do that when we love. He also promised that the Holy Spirit will remain with us and teach us everything. We always have a teacher and guide - no need to look elsewhere or feel alone. Let us strive to be in harmony with God each day.

Lord, may the Holy Spirit dwell in my heart.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace.
