Listening to Jesus as he preaches to us in today's Gospel passage, we may wonder how this threatening language can in any sense be "good news". St. Augustine encouraged us: "believe so that you will understand." We must first believe that what Jesus says is truly the word of God, the revelation of the truth that we need in order to attain to salvation and in order to have the wisdom to strive to create a better world in our own time. Jesus is teaching us to be perceptive.

We realize that the best way to understand the Bible is to look to the Bible itself for the wisdom that guides our understanding. So then let us listen to the Psalmist: "Teach us to count how few days we have and so gain wisdom of heart"(Psalm 90:12). A realization of the brevity and fragility of our life on earth will provide us with the wisdom to face life and its problems, to appreciate the great mystery of human existence, the mystery far beyond the problems.

Father in Heaven, teach us to realize the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.
