"The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament proclaims his handiwork." For the writer of Psalm 19, the universe, especially as seen in the night sky with its constellations of bright stars and even in the daytime as well, was an attractive and fascinating manifestation of God's existence, work and glory. The author teaches us that today and forever more, the heavens, the sky, continue their revelation of God's truth. They lie before us like an open book always teaching and instructing us. The Psalm goes on to mention "word", "discourse", "message", words that remind us of the Bible, "the word of God". Thus, the Psalm suggests, we have two books from God to read: the universe and the Bible.
Moreover, "his handiwork" parallels "the glory of God", thus instructing us further that creation does not merely speak to us about God's glory. God's "handiwork" is God's glory itself.
Father in heaven, deepen within our hearts Your gifts of insight and wisdom that we may read Your word and Your universe with the heart and mind of faith.
