Jesus had a very strong imaginative talent. Very simple things could lead him to create a memorable parable to help his listeners to go beyond ordinary requests or opinions to focus on things of greater importance. When someone appealed to Jesus to judge between him and his brother over an inheritance, Jesus could have dismissed matters with his simple and pertinent reply: "Who has set me up as your judge or arbiter?" But he did not leave the matter there: instead he taught his listeners about things relevant to the true meaning of life - a meaning which could never be found in greed, or in arbitration of law cases between people, or in material wealth. Material wealth and possessions do not guarantee us life, Jesus says. Almost imperceptively, however, he assures us that there is indeed a certain richness which will guarantee us life: "growing rich in the sight of God". That process begins, not from ourselves but from the gift of God, first received in our creation and then, through baptism and the sacraments, our continuous growth in faith, hope, and love. By accepting all these treasures of God's graces and by cooperating with God we can indeed gather a rich harvest.
Lord Jesus, help us to grow richer every day in the sight of God, our Father.
