The Holy Spirit had sent Paul and Barnabas on a missionary journey. When they arrived in Perga, Paul began his mission work in the local synagogue. After being invited to speak, Paul outlined the history of the Israelites from their time in Egypt to the time of Jesus. Paul emphasized Jesus' identity both as a descendent of King David, and as the promised Saviour. John the Baptist had known that he was not even worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on Jesus' feet for Jesus was the Saviour of the world.
This theme of humility is also present in the Gospel reading. Jesus washed the feet of the disciples and had told them that he was setting an example for how they were to treat others. Jesus served others and so must the disciples. Jesus said that servants weren't greater than their masters; furthermore, if they practised what they knew was right, they would receive a blessing. Jesus provided a model for humble and loving service. But then Jesus was troubled. He knew that there was a traitor in the group and he wanted the disciples to know that he was aware of this. Once he acknowledged the presence of the traitor, Jesus encouraged the disciples by telling them that those who received the disciples would be receiving Jesus and thus receiving God the Father.
Lord, help me to be a humble and loving servant.
