The disciples in Jerusalem remembered that Saul had persecuted the people who followed Jesus and they were afraid to invite him into their community. Barnabas was trusted so when he spoke up for Saul and described his conversion, the disciples welcomed Saul. Saul spoke boldly about Jesus and, as a result, his life was threatened so the believers sent him away for his own safety. It is interesting that the Church enjoyed a time of peace at that point and was thriving - an affirmation of Psalm 1 that "all the ends of the earth shall...turn to the Lord."
Love in action is the key in the reading from 1 John. Jesus dwells and remains in those who follow his commandments. He gives them the Holy Spirit who dwells within them. The theme of abiding - dwelling - is also central in John's Gospel. Jesus told the disciples to abide in him as he was already present in them. If the disciples remained in Jesus, they would bear much fruit - good works achieved by following Jesus' commandments. How do we do that? By remaining close to Jesus, just like the branches are attached to the vine. By spending time with Jesus, "the true vine". Then we will be able to love as Jesus loves - in all that we do and say. We are encouraged to love in the same way that God unconditionally loves us.
Lord, help me to stay close to You and to love as You love.
