In today's Gospel reading, we see 3 possible reasons for Jesus to ask his disciples to get into a boat to go to the others side of the lake. i) Jesus wanted to be alone to pray (v.23); ii) to get some rest (Mk.6:31-33); iii) to keep his disciples away from being caught up in a messianic uproar (Jn.6:15)
The need to pray is ours too especiall when we are so caught up with so many preoccupations each day. This is a good reminder in our relationship with Jesus.
In the 'storm' account, we can look at the symbolism involved in this episode. i) The boat represents the Church; ii) the storm the persecution; iii) Jesus' words encouraged the persecuted Christians in many parts of the world today.
As Peter walked on the sea (Vs. 28-32), he felt the wind and began to sink (v.30). He had enough faith to get out of the boat and walk on water but not enough to stand up to the storm. This was why Jesus called him a man of 'little faith'. Here Matthew portrays Peter as an example of discipleship - a disciple who is eager to learn yet with doubts. How often we are like Peter! We need to take up this challenge to remain faithful always and believe in Jesus' power as in the healing of the sick (V.36).
"Lord, grant us the faith we need to continue to trust You in all things."
