Solomon's zeal for God made him travel all the way to Gibeon, where the most important shrine in Israel was located, to worship God. There, he offers generous sacrifices to God. That night God appears to Solomon in a dream, and in the ensuing dialogue, Solomon requests from the Lord an understanding heart by which he would govern his people and distinguish between right and wrong. By his request, Solomon showed his concern for the people. This pleases God because, in caring for the people, Solomon showed concern for God's own chosen people. Not only does God grant Solomon's request, but also generously blesses him with more riches, greater glory and a long life.

In the Gospel passage, we read that although Jesus was aware that the apostles needed to be alone with him, he was aware of the greater need of the people who came looking for him. Jesus had compassion for them "for they were like sheep without a shepherd". He was deeply moved that the people came looking for him in the "deserted place". He knew that their most urgent need was spiritual and he began to teach them. Therefore, he becomes to them the Good Shepherd, taking care of his needy flock, his people. The message today is clear, that is, God cares for his people. God cares for you. It is no wonder then, that we are reminded by the psalmist, that regardless the challenges of life, to put our trust in the Lord. God is our helper, our strength, our song, and our salvation.

Lord, help me always to trust in You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
