Mary is the Mother of God because she is the mother of the second person of the Blessed Trinity in his incarnation as Jesus and Jesus is God. Jesus obviously did not leave us with answers to all the questions which our faith raises in our hearts. So, especially through its Ecumenical Councils, the Church has reflected on and decided points of doctrine that needed clarification. One such point was whether it was proper to call Mary "Mother of God". The Fathers of the Council understood that Mary was not simply mother of the human nature of Jesus, but mother of the person, just as our own mothers do not merely give life to our bodies but give birth to us as human persons.

The wisdom of the Council Fathers, inspired, of course by the Holy Spirit, has given us a wonderful doctrinal statement, which has been a solid theological basis of a very precious devotion, devotion to Mary as Mother of God, Mother of Jesus and hence Mother of the Church. This true doctrine concerning Mary is a great blessing, for it keeps us safe and free from any aberration in honouring her.
