Today's Gospel reading is inserted between Mk. 3: 21 and Mk.3: 31-35 as a 'sandwich narrative' which highlights the parallel between the accusation of Jesus' family and that of the scribes.
These charges were intended to prevent Jesus from carrying out His mission. It is obvious that it is the power of God's spirit at work in Jesus. So, to say that such actions were that of the satan is certainly to deny the very power of God. This was what the scribes claimed.
This passage also leads to vs. 31-35. It is clear that for Jesus His true family is not based on blood relationship but those who do the will of God.
This is reiterated in the first reading in the anointing of King David. The stubbornness of the scribes to admit Jesus' actions of love is also reflected in today's society.
Modern human beings give priority to material wealth than the spiritual wealth.
As followers of Jesus we need to reflect and discern constantly on the way we live our Christian life. Jesus' whole-hearted dedication to God's will is what we are called to do likewise.
"Lord, grant us the grace to adhere to Jesus' teachings in doing God's will with daily discernment on our words and actions."
