Jesus asked "Who are my mother and my brothers?" On another occasion a man asked Jesus "Who is my neighbour?" (Lk 10:29). We should not read Jesus' replies with modern prejudices. No doubt the man who asked "Who is my neighbour?" expected a straightforward answer. But Jesus unexpectedly answered with a story about a good Samaritan - no doubt much to the chagrin of the Jews listening, including the man who asked the question, for the Jews had no respect for the Samaritans and would not have been pleased to hear such a story with a Samaritan hero.

Moreover Jesus changed the question from "Who is my neighbour?" to "Who showed himself a neighbour to the wounded man?"

The point is, "Do not take anything for granted." What Jesus says will often challenge us and demand that we think differently, on a higher level. Thus, when Jesus is told that his family are outside wishing to see him, his answer draws the focus to a higher level: within the Kingdom of God all can be sisters or brothers of Jesus - and even "mother", one who brings Jesus to the world.

Lord, grant us the grace to accept others as brothers and sisters and to realise that, like Your Mother, we are to bring You to the world, to those who do not know You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
