Although not one of the Twelve, Barnabas has since ancient times been accorded the title "Apostle" for his labours alongside Paul. After recruiting Paul for the mission of Antioch, the two preached in cities in Asia Minor and in Cyprus. In each town, they began their preaching in the synagogue. They were repeatedly attacked and stoned by the Jews - once so severely that Paul almost died. Yet their preaching was not in vain. Returning to Antioch, they "reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles" (Acts 14:27). Their teaching by word of mouth was accompanied with healing of persons, through care, concern of persons. Barnabas was martyred in Cyprus some time before the year 63 A.D.
The miracle of Jesus was in the way he was present to people. So his words were accepted as a personal message. Jesus was/is a model they couldn't resist to imitate. The impact of his message created a transformation in his hearers.
The missionary spirit and thirst to proclaim the Gospel is imperative. It is the very call of our own Baptism, and central to all other ministries we are involved in.
Lord, let me be a courageous missionary disciple.
