When Jesus speaks about the son doing what his father does, he may have been speaking in a parable, encouraging his listeners to reflect on human reality as a step towards understanding him and God his Father. In recording Jesus' teaching for us, John, it seems, went beyond the parable form to put Jesus' teaching into a more mystical form as he contemplated the deeper mystery in light of the Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit. In reading the Gospels we are not reading merely the human words of Jesus; we are reading these words as the Holy Spirit taught the first generation to remember and understand them. Of course for his listeners, Jesus' parables were a simple and plain way of speaking about the mysterious actions of God and so those who heard them could catch some glimpse of the divine truth that Jesus was conveying, even though they could not understand as much as the Apostles did with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We are far more blessed in this matter than Jesus' contemporaries were.
Holy Spirit, as we listen to the Word of God at each Eucharist, may we participate in that fruit of the work of the Apostles that has lasted through the ages; may we hear God speaking to us today.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
