In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul reminds those who have been baptised that the gospel that they had preached to them, was not merely human doctrine, but one that has the power to save them. At the centre of the teaching is the death and resurrection of the person of Jesus. The Old Testament scriptures had promised one who would save them from their sins. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus has fulfilled the promise. The appearances of Jesus before many leaders of the Church and to Paul himself, objectively attests to this truth. For Paul, it reinforces his authority as an apostle and forms the basis of the faith which he shares with the Corinthians.
In the gospel passage, Jesus informs Thomas that Christian hope is not based on a human method or procedure. It is based on a person, that is, Jesus himself is "the way and the truth and the life." It means the very person of Jesus attests to the person of God, the Father and to God's promise to send a Messiah into the world. In and through Jesus, the disciples come to the Father, know the Father and see the Father. Often, as Christians we may strive constantly to seek the latest methods and materials to help us know God. The readings today remind us that Christianity is not about doctrines, methods or procedures but about a Person, Jesus Christ. If we are to draw closer to him, we have to recognise him and relate with him for who he is.
Lord, help me know You and not about You.
