It was Paul's first visit to Athens, and he was "'greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols"' (v 16). The Areopagus (custodians of teachings that introduced new religions and foreign gods) brought him to a meeting with them. At this meeting Paul introduced to them "The Unknown God" (v 23) that they had been worshipping, and taught them the following:- 1) that God as Creator, has "made the world and everything in it ... does not make His home in shrines made by human hands" (v 24); 2) that God as Provider is not "dependent on anything that human hands can do for God, since God can never be in need of anything" because it is God "Who gives everything ... to everyone," (v 25); 3) that God is Sovereign over all nations (v 26); 4) that God is our Father since "we are all God's children" (v 28) - and therefore "we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything in gold, silver, or stone that has been carved and designed by a human being" (v29); and 5) that God is Judge - "telling everyone everywhere that they must repent, because God has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged" and that God "has appointed a man to be the judge ... by raising this man from the dead" (vv 30-31).
In our multi-religious country, how does what Paul said to the Athenians, help us help others creatively connect with God and Jesus' life, death, and resurrection?
Lord, grant us diligence to study carefully our faith - so that we may have the knowledge, strength, and courage to defend it.
