Babylon was a code word symbolizing Rome, for both cities were regarded as oppressive enemies. Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC as did Rome in 70 AD. Here an angel was foretelling the destruction of Babylon (Rome) because of Rome's oppression and evil. This has been true throughout history. Unless we base our lives on God, human activities will ultimately fail. We can see this happening in our world today as many are suffering from the greed and indifference of others. God needs to be at the centre of our lives and involved in all that we do.
The Gospel of Luke was written after the destruction of Jerusalem by Rome. Even though Jerusalem had already been destroyed, Luke presented the destruction as though it would happen in the future. This was a dramatic way of declaring prophecy had been fulfilled. Luke encouraged people to flee from the punishment that was coming because they, the innocent, would suffer from the effects of the evil of others. This is obvious in the world today as the poor and the powerless suffer. Nevertheless, we are not to be discouraged; the reading ends with the coming of the Son of Man who will bring redemption to all. These two readings provide encouragement to all who suffer. Be confident that God is always with us.
Lord, help me to place my hope and trust in You.
