Today's Gospel reading and that of Genesis touch on the essence of family life - the Sacredness of married life. Jesus' teaching on the question of 'divorce' and 'remarriage' is clear. He affirms the indissolubility of the marriage bond because it is rooted in the original will of God (Gen 1:27 & Gen 2:24). He challenges the spouses to live in fidelity to each other.
The union between wife and husband is reflected in 'we' and 'us' in contrast to 'I' and 'me' approaches in the married life. This is important in our society where inequality of man and woman is still far from what God intends it to be. It takes courage to challenge and change the established order of inequality we experience in our daily living.
When we reflect on married life, we certainly need to address the importance of children as in Mark 10:14-15. In Jesus' time, children were considered as 'nobody'. For Jesus they represent the weak and powerless in society. We see how these little ones are being abused today. Those who take advantage of their vulnerability and powerlessness are to be condemned. We need to be aware of such acts of violence which can take place in our neighbourhood. Jesus calls us to take appropriate actions.
So today, married couples are invited to renew their solemn promise made to each other on their wedding day.
"Lord, grant all families deep respect for one another and live the sanctity of married life as husband, wife and children, in union with one another."
