Paul was very upset with the community in Galatia. They had begun their spiritual journey with him by walking in the ways of the Spirit, but swayed by others, they had taken the road back to a more materialistic and worldly way of living. He was convinced that they were going backwards. Many people begin a spiritual path and do well for a time, but then allow themselves to be influenced by old habits and attitudes and the pressure of other people. We must remain fixed on our spiritual goal and not allow ourselves to be made captive by anything or anyone.
In a series of humorous parables, Jesus stressed the importance of persistence in prayer. We cannot expect prayer that is lukewarm and half-hearted to be very effective. We must keep knocking on heaven's door and let God know that we are serious in our request. St. Paul also told his community to pray without ceasing. It needn't always be in words; the best prayer is often open-hearted and attentive silence. Our persistence builds a bond and a channel by which God can bless us. Prayer is not something we do from time to time; it is a way of life.
Lord, help me to deepen my prayer life.

Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others.
