Today's Gospel passage challenges us to confront the prevailing world values of materialism, greed and the tendency to accumulate material possessions. These are not the values of the Kingdom of God. We are aware of the sin of greed which is often the root causes of all evil including family dissension. (Lk. 12:13).
Jesus continued to use the 'Parable of the Rich Fool' to remind us of the rich man's Godlessness which leads to heartlessness toward others. In Mk.10:23, Jesus said: "How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God."
As Christian disciples we are challenged to live a life not determined by wealth but to live the Gospel way of life in simplicity and humility. Our main concern is to seek and do God's will by caring for others especially those who are deprived and marginalized in our society.
We are also challenged to review our lives by the 'Daily Examen'. Is our goal and fulfilment of life more for material possessions or to satisfy once hunger for power and control? Jesus wants us to consider the ultimate future in 'death'. We are responsible for the ways we live, the choices we make and to consider seriously our responsibility as Jesus' disciples on earth.
Today is the feast of St John Paul II. Let us, pray for wisdom of peace, strength of justice and the voice for the voiceless in our society.
"Lord, grant us the spirit of ceaseless prayer in our life, not for our own needs but for others."
