The Ephesians were being encouraged to live out the divine calling of the Lord. God had called them to a life in Christ - a life of humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, and peace. Unity is emphasized in the reference to "one body and one Spirit", "one hope", "one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all". Even in the early Church there was a need to emphasize unity amid diversity. This same need for unity is present today as we each try to live out God's call faithfully.
Jesus used the illustration of weather prediction to highlight the failure of the people to understand what was happening in the world around them. They knew that if the wind blew in from the Mediterranean, it would probably rain; whereas, if the wind came from the desert, it would be extremely hot. Nevertheless, the people were unable to recognize that Jesus came from God and spoke the word of God and acted through the power of God. We need to read the signs of the times in our day. Jesus is calling us to recognize injustice and to stand with those who are weak and vulnerable. We need to be in constant contact with God, so we can be open to God's will and way.
Lord, help me to be a faithful servant walking in Your will and way!
