Many people are afraid to be different in their belief and way of life. Others might laugh at them; it's not 'cool'; or they might even be harassed or persecuted. Deuteronomy insists that God gave Israel ordinances and commandments to obey. If they observed them zealously, not only would they be blessed, they would be envied and admired by many. Other nations would marvel at the greatness of God and God's people. Our times call for great fidelity to God in word, thought, and action. Let us not be afraid to be different - we might bring about the conversion of many. James assures us that good actions come from above, the Father of Lights. In fact, true, pure, and undefiled religion consists in caring for widows and orphans - the poor, the weak, and the desperate. Nothing fancy, nothing elaborate - justice and compassion are enough. Let us not complicate what is so simple and direct. Most people look outside of themselves for the source of evil. They think that by avoiding certain foods or contact with certain things, they will avoid the contamination of evil. Jesus upset many by telling them to look within themselves for the source of evil and negativity. It resides in the human heart, and when we don't recognize it and deal with it, we project it on others. Other people are not the problem, we are. Compassionate care for others is a good way to 'clean house'.
Lord, fill my heart with compassion and mercy.
