People can be brilliant and intelligent scientists, scholars, businesspeople, or technicians and understand little or nothing about God or spiritual things. Brains do not get us to heaven (although we should use our brains whenever possible!), nor can we reason our way to God or figure out the solution to life's problems. We all need help from above, and this is given by the Spirit of God. When we are filled with the Spirit, we can know and understand spiritual things. The path is illuminated before us, and our relationship with God also becomes close and personal.

The demons knew who Jesus was and why he had come, and they were terrified. They pleaded for him to leave them alone, but he sternly commanded them to silence and then expelled them. The crowd was amazed at what he had done, and especially at the power his words seemed to have. He spoke with 'words of authority,' but it does not explain what is meant by this. Most people repeat empty phrases and words they have learned from others. Often, they are filled with doubts or they do not apply these words to their own lives. The words of Jesus matched the way he lived and who he was. He spoke from his passionate justice, compassion, mercy, and close relationship with God the Father. Our words should have at least some authority, and they can when they are spoken with faith, love, conviction, and a lack of selfish ego.

Lord may Your words dwell in my heart.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
