The writer of Wisdom makes some very incisive comments on the attitude of "godless" people towards those who believe in God and strive to live accordingly. His purpose is to raise our awareness of the evil surrounding us in the world. His comments apply very directly to our modern world where we have lost many of the values that make human life decent and orient us towards a higher level of human existence. The godless may wonder what kind of end the human race may have. It has always been a part of true human experience to believe that life in this world is not all there is. Our Christian religion, based on God's self-revelation and self-giving, gives us reason to believe that God will set us free from the clutches of our enemies, especially from what Saint Paul calls "the last enemy", namely death (1Cor 15:26). Death can threaten us in many ways and on different levels, But we believe that God contemplates us and watches over us continually to guide our footsteps in the pathways of peace and joy and truth. A spiritual writer has suggested that a vocation is not a matter of being successful but of being faithful.
Heavenly Father, when a godless world threatens to draw us away from You, strengthen us and keep us faithful to the end.
