The Gospels as we have them are now conveniently divided into chapters and verses. This division was not in the originals as compiled by the evangelists but was later added for convenience of reference. Nevertheless we may assume that the division was made intelligently and follows the logical storyline that each evangelist was following. Thus Luke chapter 8 starts off by affirming that Jesus made his way through towns and villages preaching and proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom of God. We may then confidently use this affirmation to help us in our understanding of the whole chapter. The parable of the lamp in Lk 8:16-18 and its concomitant affirmations that "everything that is hidden will be made clear. So take care how you hear; for everyone who has will be given more; from anyone who has not, even what he thinks he has will be taken away" is best understood on the context of the doctrine of the Kingdom. All is made clear in Jesus' resurrection. The more we understand what Jesus says, the more capable of understanding we become.
Lord, let the light of Your truth deepen our understanding and appreciation of the mysteries of our faith.
