Sirach is wisdom literature, a collection of writings on different topics. The writer immediately set the tone as he wrote that all wisdom was from the Lord and remained with the Lord forever. Sirach asked several questions to which the expected response would be "only the Lord". Wisdom is described as a woman, created by the Lord and given freely to those who loved God. What does it mean to love God? It is not just a warm feeling. To love God means to follow God's ways. Micah 6:8 tells us what that means: "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God".
A father had brought his son to the disciples for healing from a spirit. His illness is now known as epilepsy. Unfortunately, the disciples had been unable to heal the boy. Jesus was frustrated and told the father to bring the boy to him. The father did so and asked Jesus to help them if he was able. This prompted Jesus to respond that "all things can be done for the one who believes". Jesus cast out the unclean spirit and the boy was healed. There are a couple of things of note. Firstly, the father asked Jesus to help his unbelief. How often do we feel that we believe but not quite enough? Jesus told the disciples that this spirit could only be cast out through prayer. Do we make prayer important in our lives?
Lord, help my unbelief.
