The first reading highlights the fact that a person may be able to hide his or her true personality defects in front of others but somehow the words he or she uses when relating with them, may reveal who they really are. This is because a person's true feelings or how he or she thinks about someone or something comes from within the heart. Therefore, it would be imprudent for anyone to speak highly of or praise someone only by observing the person's outward behaviour or actions.
It is in this context that Jesus warns his disciples against following those who may, through their external appearance or behaviour seem to be learned or pious, but are in reality false teachers. Often, these are people who are blind to their own sins but are quick to pass judgement on or condemn the actions and behaviour of others. In actuality, what is false in their hearts is revealed by their words. It is no wonder then that Jesus calls them 'hypocrites'.
As we prepare to enter into the Season of Lent, the readings today remind us about how we view people in relation to their outward appearances and personality. At the same time, we also have to examine our own use of words in relation to others. Are we authentic in our relationship with them? Are we quick to judge others but are blind to our own sinfulness? Do we do what we say and vice versa? The answers to these questions may decide whether we will have a meaningful and blessed Lent.
Lord, help me be sincere in word and deed.
